Frequently asked questions

Who is Sedge for, and what are the hours?

Children who are 3 or 4 by the first day of the school year. Mornings run from 8:30 a.m. to noon, the school day to 3:00 p.m., and the extended day to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, three to five days a week.

How does a tour work?

Tours are on weekday mornings, so you see the room working. You meet a guide and Opal, the director, and children can come along.

What sets tuition?

Your child's age, the schedule and the days a week they come. We go through the figures on the tour.

How is a place held, and how does the waitlist work?

A place is held with registration and the first month. When a room is full you join the waitlist, and we write to families in the order of the list as places open.

How does Vermont's pre-K program work with Sedge?

Sedge takes part in Vermont's pre-K program. Ask us how it works with our tuition: we go through it with your child's age and schedule in front of us, and we sit down with you for the state's pre-K form in March.

Is Sedge licensed, and what are the adult-to-child numbers?

Sedge is licensed by the Child Development Division of the Department for Children and Families. The license line is at the foot of every page, and each age group has a set number of adults to children.

What happens when a child is ill?

A child with a fever, vomiting or a contagious illness stays home until they feel well again. If a child becomes ill at school, we call you right away and a guide stays with them until someone arrives. Tell us what the illness is when your child is out, so we can let other families know when something is going around.

What about photos of my child?

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

Do children need to be toilet trained?

Most children in the room use the toilet on their own, and a guide helps with reminders and spare clothes. Tell us where your child is at the tour and we'll talk it through with you.

How do you handle a hard morning?

Children have hard mornings. A guide stays with the child, speaks quietly and helps them settle at something they like. If it doesn't ease, we call you, and we talk it over with you at pickup.
